What is Neuro Intervention?

Neurointervention is a relatively new field that uses state of art equipment to treat complex cerebrovascular problems from within the blood vessels. Cerebrovascular disease is one of the most devastating and misunderstood epidemics of modern era.

The word Cerebrovascular is made of two parts ‘cerebro’ meaning brain & vascular means blood vessels.

It includes diseases of brain and vascular structures that cover acute stroke and other diseases, that may lead to stroke, like carotid stenosis and aneurysm.

In last 15 years, both imaging technology and equipmenttechnology have made great strides, allowing previously untreatable lesions to become treatable.

Often these techniques eliminate the need for an open surgery. The recovery time of these procedures is also very short especially when compared to open surgeries.

Neurointervention provides a complete spectrum of minimally invasive services for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with vascular problems related to the brain and spinal cord. In the past, certain conditions that would have required open surgery such as aneurysms, carotid artery disease, vascular malformations and tumours of the head, brain, neck, and spine are now treated by Neurointervention technique.

Neurointerventional techniques such as thromboaspiration and stentrievers are also useful in the management of certain patients with acute ischemic stroke who can be treated within six (6) hours of the onset of symptoms. Neurointerventional procedures now also allow the treatment of previously untreatable or surgically difficult conditions. It is a growing sub speciality that uses techniques to treatvascular problems of the brain and spine . The treatment strategies involve the use of catheters (hollow plastic tubes) to treat the problem from inside the blood vessels under the guidance of the x-rays.

Who is a Neurointerventionist?

A neurointerventionist is a doctor who is specially trained in neurovascular diseases and imaging. A neurointerventionist specializes in treating conditions through minimally invasive methods.

What are the types of Neurointerventional procedures?

Following are the various types of Neurointerventional procedures:

  • Stroke treatment- 1. Ischemic – reduced bloodsupply to brain due to blocked arteries
  1. Haemorrhagic –rupture of brain blood vessel, brain haemorrhage, brain cell injury.
  • Cerebral aneurysms
  • Treatment of TIA (Transient Ischemic Attacks) and Carotid Artery Disease
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
  • Vascular malformations of brain, spine and carinofacial
  • Vertebroplasty
  • Pre operativeor therapeutic tumour embolization of the head, face, neck& spine.
